Misfortune on the May tour in Kandern: New details about the accident

According to the police, the May car that overturned in a serious accident in Kandern in the Lörrach district of Baden-Württemberg was not registered. The police said on Thursday that it was now being checked whether the trailer was insured.

The trailer, pulled by a tractor, tipped onto its side in a sloping curve in Kandern near Freiburg, causing the passengers to fall out. According to police, 29 people were injured in the accident on Wednesday, ten of them seriously. “Danger to life can still be ruled out,” the investigators reported.

Head injuries and broken bones

The types of injuries range from traumatic brain injuries, concussions and bone fractures to sprains. The three seriously injured people were taken to surrounding hospitals by helicopter.

Photos show the red trailer lying on its side with two rows of benches attached to it. Several beer crates are stowed at the front. There is a beer bottle and several wooden slats in front of the overturned car – and a pair of shoes is also on the side of the road.

New findings on the cause of the accident

Regarding the cause of the accident, the police wrote that the slow-moving vehicle turned left into a street. Because of the cross-slope of this road “as well as the loading and occupation,” the trailer tipped over to the right. According to the information, the 22-year-old tractor driver was not drunk.

The driver is being investigated on suspicion of negligent bodily harm, said a police spokesman. For the investigation, the police also took overview photos of the accident site with a drone.

According to previous information from the police, a group of friends from surrounding communities was traveling on the trailer. The members are all between 20 and 25 years old. There were therefore no children there.

Numerous police and rescue services were on site to care for and transport the injured, including several rescue helicopters – some from nearby Switzerland.
