Montesco, review of his album Sol de Medianoche (2024)

After four years publishing songs, the Barcelona band Montesco discover his first full-length with “Midnight Sun” (Music Bus Records, 24). After his previous work, the EP “Gardenias” (Self-released, 22), the group has been experimenting with different sounds to find the one they present to us in their official debut.

It is an alternative and psychedelic pop, in which both electronics and guitars have a much greater presence. A sound that, with its different variations, dominates each of the ten compositions of the work, creating a unique, special and somewhat gloomy atmosphere throughout the work that makes you want to listen to the album at once to discover what is hidden. in the end.

And that atmosphere is further enhanced thanks to their lyrics, in which they talk about relationships that occur within big cities. Although romantic relationships prevail from a rather neutral tone, little by little it becomes a joint story, as is proven when reaching the interlude. “10:27pm”, the one that gives way to the saddest songs of the work, where the relationship seems to have already suffered the final blow. A story that only adds to creating a unique universe that makes the album live more as an experience than as a single set of songs.

Unfortunately, jobs like “Midnight Sun” They are a rare bird in the current industry, led by solo artists who seek to get closer to the urban. For this reason it is more than interesting to give rise to and listen to fervent bands like Montescowhich are already one of the most interesting projects to follow, and listen to, within the Barcelona music scene.
