Kyiv (AFP): More than 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, hundreds of them, remained at the Azovstal steel plant in the Russian-controlled port city of Mariupol, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Vereshuk said on Tuesday. Injuried.
“More than 1,000” Ukrainian soldiers remained inside the steel plant, Iryna Vereshchuk told AFP.
“Hundreds of people were injured, the seriously injured required emergency evacuation, and the situation was getting worse every day.”
The Azov steel plant, the last stronghold of the Ukrainian army in the southeastern port city of Malibo, has had a symbolic role in the wider war since the Russian invasion.
Veresuk said over the weekend that all women, children and seniors had been evacuated from the Azov steel plant as part of a humanitarian mission in collaboration with the United Nations and the Red Cross.
