Nicolás Maduro’s Administration: A Decade of Deterioration in Citizen Guarantees

In a speech delivered in Caracas this Saturday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro faced criticism as the NGO Provea presented its 35th annual report on the state of citizen guarantees in the country. The report highlights the severe deterioration of human rights and overall quality of life during Maduro’s ten years in power.

According to Provea, the organization has documented a staggering 43,003 victims of state violence, including 1,652 cases of torture and 7,309 instances of cruel treatment. Shockingly, the report reveals that 10,085 individuals have been killed by public forces, shedding light on the rampant impunity that exists in the country.

The report also points to a policy of “promote, tolerate, and cover up abuses” that perpetuates social terror and leaves the majority of cases unpunished. In addition, the deepening crisis in Venezuela has left more than 45% of the population in a state of food insecurity, with many struggling to meet their basic needs.

Furthermore, Provea highlights that Venezuela has plummeted 39 places in the UN Human Development Index between 2015 and 2022, ranking among the lowest in the region. The country’s GDP has contracted by over 80%, severely impacting its productive capacity and worsening living conditions for its citizens.

Overall, the report paints a grim picture of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela under Maduro’s administration, where fundamental rights are systematically violated, and the population continues to suffer from extreme poverty and food insecurity. The findings underscore the urgent need for action to address these grave human rights concerns and improve the lives of Venezuelans.
