The Ministry of the Interior (Minint) reported that more than 500 Cuban migrants have been returned to Cuba in 2024, with 34 repatriation operations being carried out so far this year. The majority of these returns come from the United States, with three groups of irregular migrants being handed over to Cuban authorities in just the last week.
Among these returned migrants is a family that was deported to Cuba despite having I-220A documentation and their asylum request being denied in the United States. A scheduling error for an ICE interview led to their deportation, and despite efforts to reopen their case, the family is now pleading for an immediate review and to return to the United States.
These cases highlight the challenges faced by Cuban migrants seeking asylum in the United States and the complexities of the immigration process. The increasing number of repatriation operations reflects a growing trend in actions to address irregular migration in the region.
