“Municipalities do not block 5G antennas”, UNCEM’s appeal to the Mayors

In the era of technological innovation, the issue of 5G continues to spark debates and conflicts.

Marco Bussone, National President of the National Union of Municipalities, Communities and Mountain Bodies (Uncem), raises a call to action, underlining the importance of embracing this technology to combat the growing digital divide that affects many rural and mountainous areas of the country.

“I find myself perplexed when I read about municipalities that oppose 5G, especially if they are mountain communities”, says Bussone. “In addition to the fact that, by law, they cannot do so, it is important that we all understand together, including the Municipalities, that in a context of such a wide and growing digital divide, saying no to network infrastructures is truly counterproductive. Harmful for everyone, including the Municipalities themselves and the entire Public Administration.”

The President of Uncem cites an article in the Press which, a few years ago, highlighted the danger of remaining anchored to antiquated and restrictive mentalities, especially for mountain communities. “Saying no to 5G or, in the future, 6G, is tangible damage,” continues Bussone. “Taking legal action, such as appeals to the TAR, is not only a costly action but it leaves us behind, while the world, especially in urban areas, continues its advancement. It is particularly disconcerting considering that we have 4,230 reports, collected through an Uncem investigation, of areas in Italy where there is no telephone coverage.”

Uncem’s invitation is clear: encourage the installation of network infrastructures, including repeaters for 5Ggiven that it is essential to reduce the digital divide which makes rural and mountain areas less competitive and attractive. “We need to embrace technology, networks and infrastructure,” says Bussone. “This is the time to say yes to 5G, to the 6G of tomorrow and to all technologies leading to better networks and better services for businesses and citizens”.

Uncem underlines the importance of working together with the Mayors to encourage investments by network operators and the State, using tools such as the BUL Plan, the 5G Italy Plan and the 1Giga Italy Plan, to guarantee better and broader connectivity across the entire National territory.

In conclusion, Uncem’s call is clear: it is time to embrace the digital future and work with determination to ensure that no community is left behind in the era of global connectivity.
