NBA | Trade News: Dennis Schröder is leaving the Toronto Raptors

After a little more than half a year, the Toronto Raptors chapter is over for Dennis Schröder. The world champion and DBB captain is traded by the Canadians to the Brooklyn Nets.

Dennis Schröder already knows the NBA business very well. The 30-year-old is currently playing in his eleventh season in the best basketball league in the world. During this period he played for six different teams and was traded three times. Now, shortly before the deadline on Thursday (9 p.m. German time), the fourth trade and the seventh employer of his career will be added.

Schröder only signed in Toronto in the summer of 2023. As the reigning world champion and MVP of the tournament, the national team captain initially started the season as a starter. But the Canadians’ season did not develop as desired; with a record of only 18 wins to 33 defeats and 12th place in the Eastern Conference, their hopes for the playoffs and even the play-in tournament are manageable.

Therefore, the Raptors’ front office led by team president Masai Ujiri initiated a roster shakeup a few weeks ago. Shortly before the turn of the year, Toronto traded OG Anunoby for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a second round pick to the New York Knicks. In mid-January, the last important piece of the puzzle of the 2019 championship team had to go in the person of Pascal Siakam (to the Indiana Pacers).

Schröder: Figures just above the career average

At the start of the season, Schröder, who is under contract until 2025 and earns almost $13 million per season, impressed with solid performances. However, his production declined as the season progressed. At the end of December he also lost his position as starter at the point guard position, which Quickley has held since his trade to Toronto.

Over the entire season, Schröder averaged 13.7 points and 6.1 assists with shooting percentages of 44.2 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three-point line and 85.2 percent from the free throw line. Apart from the points average, these values put him just above his career average (14 points, 4.8 assists, shooting splits: 43.4/33.7/83.7).
