New department ‘Women’s Careers’ presented in the Ministry of the Interior on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day

The Ministry of the Interior hosted a reception on March 8, 2024 on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented the new “Women’s Careers” department, which will be headed by Sabrina Jamnig from April 1, 2024.

On International Women’s Day, the focus in the Ministry of the Interior was on female employees, which is 30.6 percent of those employed there: 24 percent of the Austrian executive are female, and in the security administration it is almost 58 percent. Of the more than 2,800 future police officers currently undergoing training, 1,060 are women. An example of the increasing proportion of women in the executive branch: In St. Pölten, on January 22, 2024, more women than men were sworn in for the first time.

“Women in police stations are crucial so that daily challenges can be overcome with team spirit and, above all, professionalism,” emphasized the Interior Minister. “This shows us the hot topic of protection from violence. Women who have been victims of violence by men are more likely to confide in a woman.”

The “Women’s Careers” department will begin work on April 1, 2024

The fact is, however, that women are not represented in leadership positions to the appropriate extent. This is shown by the results of the “Women in Leadership Positions” working group, which was commissioned by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner in June 2022. Under the leadership of State Police Director Michaela Kohlweiß, the project team developed more than 40 measures to increase the proportion of women in leadership positions. One of these measures is the newly founded “Women’s Careers” department, which will begin work on April 1, 2024 under the leadership of Sabrina Jamnig. The task of the department is to implement the measures developed in the medium and long term.

Karner added: “Let’s finally banish the saying ‘A woman suits her husband’ to the mothballs. A woman suits her wife.” Under this motto, the reception continued with a keynote speech by the deputy director and head of the intelligence service, Sylvia Mayer. Afterwards, the speaker, Federal Police Director Michael Takàcs, the Carinthian State Police Director Michaela Kohlweiß, Elisabeth Wenger-Donig, head of the department for “return, reintegration and quality development” and the deputy head of the security academy and equal rights officer Michael Holzer discussed the topic “Opportunities in change – leadership becomes female”.
