Tehran stated that the Supreme National Security Council of Iran considered the understanding reached by the Rouhani government in Vienna to be illegal. At the same time, Washington expressed the hope that Iranian President Lacey would complete the negotiations.

Iranian government spokesperson Ali Rabie said that the committee, which was appointed by the Supreme National Security Council of Iran under the “Sanctions Lifting and Ensuring National Interests” Act, emphasized that the understanding reached by Rouhani’s government in Vienna was not in compliance with the law.

Ali Rabiet added that negotiations will continue after the next government takes office, noting that his country has repeatedly expressed its willingness to exchange prisoners with the United States.

Rabiere accused Washington of obstructing the prisoner exchange agreement and believed that the United States should be responsible for failing to exchange prisoners. In addition, Rabiet added that the administration of US President Joe Biden linked the issue of prisoner exchange to Iran’s refusal to accept the nuclear agreement.

On the other hand, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that the sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran will continue to exist unless the sanctions are lifted according to the negotiated diplomatic process.

Price emphasized at the press conference that his country hopes that the new Iranian president will choose to advance the Vienna talks to restart the Iran nuclear agreement.

It is expected that the President-elect of Iran Lacey will be sworn in before the Shura Committee on August 5.

Iran and world powers began negotiations in April to save the international agreement on the Iranian nuclear agreement reached in 2015.

The United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 during the period of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021). Since then, the agreement has been faltering. Trump re-imposed sanctions on Iran. Tehran responded to this. Stop fulfilling most of the obligations stipulated in the Iran nuclear agreement.

The agreement reached in Vienna lifted Western and United Nations sanctions against Tehran in exchange for Iran’s promise not to acquire nuclear weapons and drastically cut its nuclear program, which is subject to very strict inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
