With the defeat, the whites have seven points up on Aston Villa in fourth place. Tottenham have played one less game and are dependent on Villa stumbling twice at the end of the season. Tottenham suffered their third straight defeat on Thursday.
Trevoh Chalobah put Chelsea in the lead after just under half an hour. In the 2nd half, Nicolas Jackson made it 2-0 when he put the ball into the goal on the return from Cole Palmer’s free kick, which hit the crossbar.
Palmer has been an important piece in the Chelsea team and has 20 nets in the league. That is just one fewer than top scorer Erling Braut Haaland.
Tottenham pressed for scoring and created chances, but the ball did not go into the goal for the lily-whites.
The win was a boost for Chelsea, who have struggled this season. The royal blues are number eight and have nine points up on Tottenham.
At the weekend, Chelsea will face West Ham, while Tottenham play away to Liverpool.
