“Not socialist enough”: this is how Beijing censors influencers who are not in line with the Party’s values

BEIJING – “Not socialist enough”. With a stroke of the pen – indeed, of the keyboard – in this 2021 that is about to end, Beijing has closed or suspended more than 20 thousand influencer accounts on social networks, some with tens of millions of followers: not in line with the values ​​promoted by the Party. A few days ago, the Cyberspace Administration of China (the authority that deals with regulating cyberspace) revealed the numbers of this crackdown on the web, which also asked social media platforms to filter more carefully the content produced and disseminated on the internet to limit those who “abuse their influence online and circulate misleading content”.
