Oscars 2024: the French film “Anatomy of a Fall” nominated in five categories including best film

Not selected to represent France in the best foreign film category at the Oscars, “Anatomy of a Fall” still found a place in the famous cinema awards ceremony. The French film directed by Justine Triet, Palme d’Or at Cannes last May, is nominated in five categories including the very prestigious “best film”.

It can also claim an Oscar for best original screenplay, best direction or even best editing. German actress Sandra Hueller, who plays a woman accused of killing her husband, is nominated for an Oscar for best actress. At the beginning of January, “Anatomy of a Fall” in English was awarded two Golden Globes, the precursor to the Oscars, in the “best foreign language film” and “best screenplay” category. The Oscars will be awarded on March 10, in Los Angeles (California, United States).

The failure of “Dodin Bouffant”

The film was snubbed in favor of “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant” to represent France in the “best international film” category. A choice which caused controversy and which now sounds like a failure: the work of Trân Anh Hùng, with Benoit Magimel and Juliette Binoche and prize for directing on the Croisette, was shunned and was ultimately not one of the five named. “It’s absolutely obvious that we didn’t send the right film to the Oscars”Charles Gillibert, one of the members of the commission responsible for this decision, told AFP before the appointments were announced.

After this “industrial accident”the producer pleads for a reform of the body in order “to expand the number of voters”.

“Oppenheimer” leads the nominations

Already crowned with five Golden Globes, “Oppenheimer”, Christopher Nolan’s film about the father of the atomic bomb, dominates the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards with 13 nominations. Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Inception, Dunkerque) who plays Robert Oppenheimer consumed by the devastating consequences of his creation, is nominated, as expected, in the best actor category.

Actor Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes), who shines as a conservative bureaucrat, more concerned with the dismissal of an Oppenheimer with communist sympathies than with the subtleties of quantum physics, and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Quietly, Mary Poppins Returns) who plays the inventor’s wife, are both nominated in the categories of best supporting actor and best supporting actress.

The other big box office triumph of 2023, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie”, collected eight. “Poor Creatures”, by Yorgos Lanthimos, a feature film which depicts a feminine Frankenstein in the Victorian era, was nominated 11 times and “Killers of the Flower Moon”, a film by Martin Scorsese about the assassinations of Native Americans in the Early 20th century Oklahoma, in 10 categories.
