Pakistani raid in south-eastern Iran: “Terrorists killed”. Tehran summons the ambassador. China calls for calm: “Avoid escalation”

The Iranian city of Saravanain the south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchistanwas hit with missiles e drones from neighboring Pakistan in the early hours of the morning. According to Tehran’s Foreign Ministry they were killed nine peopleamong which four children and three women of Afghan origin. Videos posted on social media show a number of buildings damaged in the attack with thick smoke rising from them. Some people were stuck under the rubble. The raids are the last stage of a period of increasing tension between the two nuclear powers: in recent days the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had launched attacks on Pakistani territory to demolish the bases of the Sunni separatist group Jaish al-Adl, causing the death of two children. Condemning the episode, the Islamabad government had announced a military reaction.

“I can confirm that we have conducted attacks against anti-Pakistan militant groups inside Iran,” an intelligence official confirmed. Later, a statement from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry explained that “this morning’s action, code-named “Marg Bar Sarmachar” (“death to the rebels”) was undertaken in light of credible information regarding imminent terrorist activities on a large scale by the so-called Sarmachar”, the militants of the Baluchistan Liberation Front. “A number of terrorists were killed,” it read. The Iranian government has summoned the Pakistani charge d’affaires to Tehran to have “explanations” on the attack: Iran “wants a immediate clarification by the Pakistani authorities on this incident”, state official sources cited by the agency More.

Beijing’s diplomacy intervenes by proposing itself as a mediator: “China sincerely hopes that the two sides can demonstrate calm and moderation and avoid an escalation of tension“, says the spokeswoman of the Beijing Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning. The Turkish Foreign Ministry also expressed concern “over the developments, which began with Iranian attacks against some targets in Iraq, then expanded by Iranian attacks against some targets inside Pakistan and intensified with Pakistani attacks against targets inside of Iran this morning”. In a statement, Ankara hopes for the resolution of “all issues through dialogue and cooperationwithout further threatening regional security and stability” and on the basis of “mutual respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries”.
