After almost eight hours, former president Pedro Castillo, who is serving preventive detention in the Diroes prison for his failed self-coup on December 7, 2022 and for alleged acts of corruption during his government, was discharged after suffering a strong decompensation in his health.

According to a brief statement from the National Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE) published on his personal X account (formerly Twitter), Castillo Terrones was taken at around 9:55 a.m. to the II Vitarte hospital of EsSalud.

The former head of state was admitted at 10:17 in the morning for apparently having chest pain. There they are carrying out the respective examinations and monitoring. For now, he is stable, progressing favorably and remains under observation by doctors.

Congressmen Kelly Portalatino (Perú Libre), Pasión Dávila (Bloque Magisterial), the former Ministers of Labor and Defense of his administration, Iber Maraví and Walter Ayala, respectively, were some of the people who immediately arrived at the hospital to find out about the health of Pedro Castillo, who is protected by INPE agents.

“We ask international organizations to address the health and legal situation. On the other hand, we demand a comprehensive and timely evaluation of your health,” he wrote in his personal X account.

In addition, Bellido urged the Constitution Commission, controlled by Fujimori, to consider his bill seeking amnesty for Castillo to get out of jail. “I urged the Constitution Commission to attend to my bill and issue a favorable opinion to save the life of Pedro Castillo,” he added.

The former Minister of Women, Anahí Durand, also mentioned that the Boluarte Zegarra regime “must ensure their right to health and is not doing so.”

Raúl Noblecilla, who was Castillo’s lawyer and former vice minister of Territorial Governance, questioned that “the parliamentary left has shown a concern and solidarity never seen before.”
