Since CONMEBOL installed the new format of the Libertadores preliminary phase in 2017, Peruvian clubs were only able to advance once in seven occasionswith two painful eliminations due to goal difference.

Municipal opened national participation in Phase 1 of the Libertadores when they had to meet the current runner-up Independiente del Valle in 2017.
