Since CONMEBOL installed the new format of the Libertadores preliminary phase in 2017, Peruvian clubs were only able to advance once in seven occasionswith two painful eliminations due to goal difference.
Municipal opened national participation in Phase 1 of the Libertadores when they had to meet the current runner-up Independiente del Valle in 2017. After losing 1-0 at home, the Academy beat their rival in Ecuador 2-1 and seemed to have sealed their ticket to the Phase 2, but an agonizing goal from Gabriel Cortez sealed their fate in the Cup.
The two participations in later years also culminated in bitter eliminations: Real Garcilaso and Universitario ended up eliminated at home by agonizing goals when they seemed to have finished their respective series.
In 2020 just a Peruvian club for for the first and only time it passed Phase 1: the University of Gregorio Pérez They drew against Carabobo in Venezuela and later won at the Monumental thanks to a solitary goal from Federico Alonso.
Later César Vallejo did not measure up against Caracas or Olimpia and said goodbye to both Libertadores without scoring goals. Against Nacional of Paraguay in 2023, Sport Huancayo won at home, fell 2-1 in the second leg and it seemed that everything was decided in the penalty shootout, but another agonizing goal decided the fate of a Peruvian club in Phase 1 of the tournament .
