– It feels sad, and it has been a long process for me. But I am also sure that this is right now, says Lan Marie Berg Today’s business.
MGD’s national meeting starts on Friday at Fornebu, outside Oslo. Now Berg says that she will not stand for re-election to the Storting. If she is elected as deputy leader, she will resign from office at the next national meeting, in the spring of 2025.
At Easter, she was asked by the nomination committee to think about a possible re-election for next year’s general election.
– I have done that, and the conclusion is the same. When I resign to the Storting, it will also be natural to step down from the party leadership. But I am highly motivated to work for the MDGs as an elected member of Parliament and as deputy leader for one more year – if the party wants, she says.
Lan says that she had informed the electoral committee that she was not going to take another term in the Storting, and challenged them to find another.
Not about toddler life
Berg emphasizes to the newspaper that the election is not about the lives of young children or time constraints. Nor is it about threats and incitement online.
She simply wants to do something else, she says.
– For me, it’s about saying no to the commitment that lasts four years after 2025.
She goes on to say that those who tried to scare her away actually made her more determined to continue.
– It is important to say that if you are a woman with a minority background and have a politician in your belly, then dare to throw yourself into it.
Party leader Arild Hermstad is willing to accept the nomination in Oslo.
Hermstad informs TV 2 that he learned that Lan Marie Berg is withdrawing from politics just a few days before the party’s national meeting.
– It is up to the nomination committee in Oslo MDG how they compile the list, says Hermstad.
