There is an alert on the Caribbean coast, especially in Santa Marta, due to the presence of the Portuguese frigate on several beaches. This is a highly toxic species that generates multiple health complications for those who touch it.
This type of species, which is quite harmful to health, has been sighted in several areas in the north of Santa Marta, especially on two beaches: Taganga and Pescaito.
The authorities warn tourists and bathers, taking into account that the poison produced by the Portuguese frigatebird, also known as the blue bottle, is quite dangerous and causes health problems.
Bathers entering the waters should keep in mind that this is a very showy animal, due to its colors, but they should avoid contact.
Doctor Rodrigo Mendoza reported that this “is a mollusk that produces a chemical that is highly irritating to the skin. Normally what it generates upon contact is intense pain and, in some cases, local redness and allergic reactions that turn out to be very severe.”
According to experts in marine biology, the Portuguese frigate always arrives at the Colombian coast, especially Santa Marta, between the months of February, March and April, taking into account that it is easier for it to get food in the cold waters.
