Fluminense traveled to Quito, Ecuador, where they will play another continental final against LDU, now for the Recopa Sul-Americana, this Thursday (22), at 9:30 pm (Brasília time). Seeking revenge for the 2008 clash, Flu is competing in the Recopa for the first time in history, while the Ecuadorians won the competition twice: in 2009 and 2010.
Current champion of the Copa Sudamericana, LDU has played, so far, just one match in 2024, where it beat Universidad Católica (Ecuador) 2-0, last Saturday (17). The greater pace of the game could be a point in favor of the visitors. However, young Jairón Charcopa, 20 years old, decided the most recent clash with two goals, being an athlete for Fluminense to “keep an eye on” in the decision.
On the other hand, Tricolor das Laranjeiras entered the field nine times during the season, all for the Campeonato Carioca, arriving at the match unbeaten. Regarding the lineup, coach Fernando Diniz will send “maximum force”, with the possibility of the return of three athletes: Marlon, Manoel and Keno. The three traveled to Quito, were linked and are at the coach’s disposal. Samuel Xavier and John Kennedy, the latter being sent off in the Conmebol Libertadores final, remain in Brazil and are missing from the American champion team.
RETROSPECT
In a balanced history, Fluminense is slightly superior in numbers. In the eight clashes between the teams, four ended in a Tricolor victory, three were won by the Ecuadorians and one match ended in a draw. Each team scored 12 goals against the other.
Among these meetings, the 2008 Libertadores finals stand out, where the Quito team emerged champion, and two clashes for the Copa Sudamericana: the 2009 final, won by LDU, and the round of 16 in 2017 (the last meeting between the clubs), with the Rio de Janeiro teams qualifying for the next phase of that edition.

HECK
Lucas Carvalho, Fluminense sector player: “Fluminense has a more qualified squad than their opponents, who have only played one game this year so far. However, they face a Copa Sudamericana champion team, as visitors and without the habit of playing at altitude. Furthermore, the squad could come in full, looking for revenge for the existing rivalry with LDU. I imagine it will be a truncated game, but I’m betting on a slim victory for Rio’s Tricolor.” Scoreboard: LDU 0 x 1 Fluminense.
