Quentin Tarantino Retrospective at the Brazilian Cinematheque – MONDO MODA

The Cinemateca Brasileira presents the Quentin Tarantino Retrospective to celebrate 30 years of Pulp Fiction: Time of Violence, between the 15th and 25th of February.
A self-taught film buff, Tarantino began writing scripts when he was still working in a video store, where he was known for his great cinematic knowledge. His first project as a director, the amateur “My Best Friend’s Birthday”, was produced in 1987 with filmmaker friends and co-workers. What remains of the film, which was never completed, will be shown at the exhibition in a rare session, along with the filmmaker’s debut feature, “Reservoir Dogs” (1992).
With his first feature film, Tarantino became a critical and popular success among American independent cinema, but it was with “Pulp Fiction”, winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Festival, that the director became a phenomenon.
In the following years, he released “Jackie Brown” (1997), “Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2” (2003-2004) – a duo that will be shown in 35mm –, “Death Proof” (2007), “Inglourious Basterds ” (2009), “Django Unchained” (2012), “The Hateful Eight” (2015) and “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (2019)”.
Celebrated and controversial in equal measure, the filmmaker developed his directing style around scenes of extreme and stylized violence, often interspersed with extensive, humorous dialogues full of pop culture references. The use of non-linear narrative is also one of his hallmarks, from which he reveals the layers of his characters and builds a complex and suspenseful dramaturgy. His cinephilia is also clear in the many homages to films and genres, such as spaghetti western, blaxploitation and noir.
The programming is free. For sessions in cinemas, tickets are distributed one hour in advance. For outdoor sessions, capacity is subject to chair occupancy. In case of rain, outdoor sessions will be held in indoor rooms.
