The Rayados de Monterrey of Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales tied 1-1 this Sunday with the Tigres UANL and qualified for the semifinals of the Clausura 2024 Mexican soccer tournament.

In a play started by Canales, Mexican Jordi Cortizo scored for the Rayados of Argentine coach Fernando Ortiz, after Tigres had taken the lead with a goal from Frenchman Andre Pierre Gignac.

The Argentine Juan Brunetta finished off from the outside in the 12th minute and in the 26th minute Gignac got hold of a ball in the area and with his right foot scored the 0-1 score, which at that moment tied the series.

Monterrey changed its face in the second half in which Ortiz sent Jordi Cortizo and Édson Gutiérrez onto the field.

The Argentine Maxi Meza and Luis Romo finished from the outside in a pair of arrivals for the Rayados, who tied 1-1 in the 59th minute. Canales shot on goal, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced at the feet of Cortizo, who converted with a touch of his left foot.

Both teams had scoring opportunities but they did not move the scoreboard and Monterrey won the series 3-2.

In the semifinals, Monterrey will face Cruz Azul led by Argentine coach Martín Anselmi, who a while before tied 2-2 with the Pumas UNAM and won the series 4-2.
