– Carl was an exceptional person who lived an extraordinary life, the family says in a statement, according to Deadline.
Weathers lived to be 76 years old. The family states that he died on Thursday, while he was sleeping.
Weathers played “Apollo Creed” in the popular boxing movies.
Apollo Creed was Sylvester Stallone, who played Rocky, his opponent in the first and second films from 1976 and 1979 respectively.
The two characters later went from being bitter rivals to becoming close friends in the film series.
In a video on Instagram on the night of Saturday Norwegian time, Stallone says that they were also very close in reality.
– This is a very sad day for me. I’m so sorry, I can’t even describe it. Carl Weathers was such a close part of my life, my success, everything, says the actor.
– I would never have achieved what we achieved with “Rocky” without him. He was brilliant. His size, his voice, his strength, how athletic he was. But more importantly – his heart and his soul. It is a terrible loss.
– He was magical, and I was lucky enough to be a part of his life.
Weathers is undoubtedly best known for his role in “Rocky”, but has also played in “Predator” and “Happy Gilmore”.
