Russia announces exercises with non-strategic nuclear weapons

CNN Report: Russia Announces Exercises with Non-Strategic Nuclear Weapons in Response to Western Tension

In a recent announcement, Russia’s Defense Ministry revealed plans to conduct exercises with non-strategic nuclear weapons in response to what they described as an “unprecedented” escalation of tension by the West. The exercises, which will involve missile formations of the Southern Military District along with aviation and naval forces, aim to practice the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons.

The Defense Ministry emphasized that these exercises are essential to maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian State. This move comes in light of provocative statements and threats made by certain Western officials against Russia.

Non-strategic nuclear weapons, also known as tactical nuclear weapons, are smaller in power compared to strategic ones and can be easily moved and fired using conventional systems. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Weapons, citing concerns over the United States developing new types of nuclear weapons.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov criticized the West for provoking tensions and mentioned the deployment of armed forces by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States in Ukraine as a reason for Moscow to take response measures. Peskov’s comments came in response to inquiries about Russia’s upcoming military exercises, including the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons.

The announcement of these exercises underscores the growing tensions between Russia and the West, raising concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region.
