Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, died in a prison camp in the Arctic on February 16, according to Russian authorities. He had served a 19-year prison sentence there. Western countries blamed Putin for his death.

In June 2021, the Russian judiciary classified all of Navalny’s organizations as “extremist,” meaning employees and supporters risk being prosecuted, imprisoned and sentenced. Many of Navalny’s comrades-in-arms went into exile to avoid prison sentences. Others were sentenced to long prison terms.
