Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reports that Russia has launched a ground offensive in the Kharkiv region in the northeast of the country.
– Around 5 o’clock the enemy made an attempt to break through our defense line under the cover of armored vehicles. These attacks were repulsed for the time being, but fighting continues with varying intensity, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement. (NTB-AFP-Reuters)
Kyiv is sending reinforcements to the area.
A high-ranking military source in the Ukrainian defense tells Reuters that the Russian forces advanced one kilometer near the border town of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region.
The Ukrainian authorities started the evacuation of civilians in Vovchansk and nearby areas early today.
– Together with humanitarian organisations, we set up transport for those who do not have cars, says head of Vovchansk’s military administration, Tamaz Gamarashvili.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense claims that they had captured at least two villages in the region this week.
Before the war, Kharkiv was Ukraine’s second largest city. The town is only three or four miles from the Russian border. The Russians have intensified their attacks against the area recently, which now appears to be the beginning of a larger offensive.
