The detective series “Vera” has been a great success both in Great Britain and here at home in Norway.
In February, actress Brenda Blethyn turned 78.
Detective Vera Stanhope, played by actress Brenda Blethyn, tackles murder mysteries in the beautiful British countryside in the drama series.
The character Vera has become a viewer favorite thanks to her tart charm and direct attitude, while always having her heart in the right place.
Together with her team – which over the years has included colleagues Aiden Healy (played by Kenny Doughty), David Leon (Joe Ashworth) and of course veteran Kenny Lockhart with his Scottish accent (played by actor Jon Morrison) – Vera solves clever murder mysteries.
The series is based on the renowned author Ann Cleeve’s crime novels, and first premiered back in 2011. Since then, the TV series has become very popular – both in the British Isles and here in Scandinavia.

End after 14 years: “Will always be grateful”
The drama series has actually been produced for 13 seasons spanning 50 episodes in total.
In 2025, the new season, the 14th in a row, comes to British television. In Norway, viewers have been able to follow Vera on both NRK, where several of the episodes are still available online.
Now ITV reports a sad message about the popular series, writes The Sun, according to The daily newspaper.
After 14 years on the screen, it is now over for “Vera”, which has won several awards. Season 14 will be the last and will consist of two episodes of 90 minutes, writes ITV.
Brenda Blethyn responds to the shock news with a touching message, according to BirminghamLive.
“Working with Vera has been a joy from start to finish and I’m sad to say Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the past fourteen years. I will always be grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to throw me into the role.” she writes and continues:
“The producers, dream cast and crew have been amazing and I will miss them, but I will not forget their immense talent, the camaraderie, the laughter or kindness we shared or the friendship of the people of the North East and our fans around the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Brenda Blethyn is well married
Out of the limelight, actress Brenda Blethyn has lived with her love Michael Mayhew for many years.
He is a well-known director at, among others, the National Theater in London.
They have been a couple since 1975 and decided to tie the knot in 2010.
What sad news. The series has really been a joy to follow, but everything in its time.
