Scottie Scheffler: The number one wins in Augusta

The Austrian Sepp Straka says goodbye to the legendary major with a round of 72. Tiger Woods recovered on the final day.

Scottie Scheffler won the legendary Masters in Augusta for the second time in his career. The number one in the world golf rankings prevailed on Sunday (local time) thanks to a strong round of 68 at the end and was four strokes ahead of the up-and-coming Swede Ludvig Aberg in his Masters premiere. The Austrian Sepp Straka finished the tournament in tied 16th place.

At the end of the Masters in Augusta, Straka played his second best round at the National Golf Club. The Viennese needed 72 strokes on the fourth day on Sunday on the par-72 course and finished the tournament tied for 16th place. The 30-year-old went into the final day in 20th place and celebrated his best Masters result after finishing 30th and 46th.

Straka managed birdies on holes one, eight and in the finish on the 18th. In contrast, there were bogeys on holes five, 15 and 17. The Austro-American finished the tournament with two shots over par, in the previous rounds he had 73, 71 and 74 strokes needed to get into the clubhouse.

“What a phase”

“I have no words for what it means to me to win this tournament for the second time – and I have even fewer words for what it means to me to become a father for the first time. What a phase in my life,” said tournament winner Scheffler, immediately before he was presented with the traditional green jacket by last year’s winner Jon Rahm.

Scheffler, who is expecting the birth of his first child at the end of April, finished the tournament eleven strokes under par. Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood shared third place behind Aberg with four strokes under par. Still on the eighth hole of the final day, Scheffler, Aberg, Homa and Morikawa were tied, but Scheffler pulled away with three birdies in a row. Scheffler has now won three of the four tournaments he has competed in this year. He finished second at the Houston Open.

Woods with debacle

Superstar Tiger Woods ended the tournament two days after his Masters negative record with a round of 77, recovering somewhat from the debacle the day before. The 48-year-old Californian needed 82 strokes for the 18 holes on the third day of the tournament at Magnolia Lane – the 15-time major winner had never completed a worse round at the Masters. Woods has now played 100 rounds at the Masters, and no one has ever made his 24 cuts in a row. He finished the tournament in 60th place. “Thursday and Friday it was a good fight, but yesterday didn’t go that way at all,” said Woods. “It was a good week all in all, considering I haven’t played a full tournament for a long time.” (APA)
