Search for RAF members: Further search in Friedrichshain

In their search for the ex-RAF terrorists Staub and Garweg, police officers searched a house on Grünberger Strasse in Berlin-Friedrichshain – without success. It was the second search this Sunday.

The suspects were not caught in a new police operation in connection with the search for the suspected RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub (69) and Burkhard Garweg (55) in Berlin. A spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office said this on Sunday evening after the search in the Friedrichshain district.

“The officers did not find anyone in the apartment,” she told the AFP news agency. There were no arrests made during the operation. The search for the two men will continue after the end of the operation. “The apartment is now being examined forensically,” said the spokeswoman. “The evaluation will probably take a few days.”

As the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office confirmed to rbb, emergency services from the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Berlin police and the LKA Lower Saxony took part in the operation. According to rbb information, there was, among other things, a police armored vehicle on Grünberger Strasse.

Already on Sunday morning, a special operations team (SEK) had searched parts of a left-wing alternative trailer site in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The measure was “in connection with the search” for the wanted ex-RAF terrorists Staub and Garweg, as the lead State Criminal Police Office (LKA) of Lower Saxony announced.

The wanted suspected RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg was “most likely” living in a caravan on the site, as a spokesman for the LKA Lower Saxony said. The caravan was confiscated. Forces from the Technical Relief Agency were on site to support the police in removing the caravan.

The operation began around 7:30 a.m. in a commercial area on the corner of Markgrafendamm and Persiusstrasse. According to police, ten people were arrested for identity checks and then released. It turned out that dust and cooking path were not among them. According to a spokesman for the Berlin police, a total of up to 130 forces were deployed.

Staub and Garweg’s accomplice, Daniela Klette, was arrested in Berlin this week. When her apartment was searched, heavy weapons were found – including a rocket-propelled grenade.

Since Klette’s arrest, investigators have suspected that Staub and Garweg could be in Berlin. The State Criminal Police Office has recently intensified the search in and around Berlin for the former RAF terrorists.
