Sebastian Ofner had no real chance against Pedro Cachin in the first round of the Madrid Open
That’s it again from an Austrian perspective with the Mutua Madrid Open 2024: After Dominic Thiem had already failed to qualify for the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital, the number one ÖTV player was also on Thursday , Sebastian Ofner, to say goodbye to the highly endowed combined event. The Styrian clearly had to bow to the Argentinian Pedro Cachin 3:6, 3:6.
The South American, on the other hand, can look forward to a second-round duel against the American Francis Tiafoe – and admittedly he fully deserves it. In the decisive moments, Cachin reeled off his strengths convincingly and humorlessly and remained consistent throughout the game, even if brief uncertainties, such as a 0:30 score, flared up towards the end of the second set.
Ofner, on the other hand, seemed nervous and didn’t take much time between rallies to cool down a bit. Even without any apparent pressure from the opposing side, some balls sailed noticeably far out of bounds. It is questionable whether the man from Bruck an der Mur was really fit for the game. He will now continue at the next Masters event in Rome in about two weeks – where the 27-year-old is firmly represented in the main field.
The individual tableau in Madrid.
