The Ascension marks the day when Jesus was taken up into heaven. All over the country, the day is marked with religious services – indoors and outdoors.

Christ’s ascension is celebrated in memory of Jesus ascending to heaven, forty days after he rose from the dead.
– Christ’s ascension is a day that reminds us that we are not alone. Jesus blessed the disciples and promised to be with them every day, says church council leader Harald Hegstad.
The story of Jesus being taken up to heaven is in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible. Jesus promises to be with the disciples and that God will send the Holy Spirit.
Ascension Day is also called Maundy Thursday – and ten days later comes Pentecost, when the church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to earth.

Every year there are around 400 services in the Church of Norway on Ascension Day, in total between 20,000 and 30,000 attend these services. In several places there is a tradition of outdoor services on this holiday.

- Many congregations celebrate confirmation on Ascension Day
- Many people celebrate church services outdoors on this day
- Many people take the church service celebration to cabins, sports chapels or out into the cityscape
- Many invite to pilgrimages in the local area
- There will be several services where cultural expressions can characterize the celebration: such as poetry, cultural and folk music fairs
