Sim swapping, phishing and ransomware: in Mexico the scam now runs on WhatsApp

It’s called “Sim swapping”, and it’s the most popular technique for emptying your bank account. In Mexico, writes Darinka Rodriguez, a chronicler of the Country, has become so popular that over the past 12 months, account thefts have increased by 120 percent, through fake phone calls from fake robots and sending phishing e ransomware on messaging applications.

Thanks to lockdowns and the use of the network for all kinds of needs, cyber thieves are becoming more and more shrewd and exploit the naivety of even those who feel smart.
