On Thursday, Bae Hyun-jin, a lawmaker from South Korea’s conservative ruling People’s Power Party, she was hospitalized in hospital after being hit on the head with a stone by a teenager while she was outside a building in a central neighborhood of Seoul. The boy was stopped immediately afterwards: the reasons for the attack are currently unknown. The hospital said that Bae Hyun-jin suffered a head injury, but that she is in stable condition. Bae Hyun-jin is 40 years old, she is a former television journalist and she is in her first term as a parliamentarian.
It is the second attack in a month against a politician: at the beginning of January, Lee Jae-myung, opposition leader, was stabbed. Although South Korea is a generally safe country, there has recently been high political tension ahead of parliamentary elections in April.
