Spain, People’s Party wins regional elections in Madrid

by admin

The People’s Party wins the early regional elections in the autonomous region of Madrid, but to govern it will have to ally itself with Vox’s far right. According to the exit polls released by Gad3 for Telemadrid and Tve, the outgoing president Isabel Diaz Ayuso could be confirmed, after the success at the polls with 43.7% of the preferences, bringing the center-right party to 62-65 deputies in the Regional Assembly , more than double the 30 obtained in 2019. A number which, however, would not be sufficient to form a government, and which would force the PP to look to the alliance with the far right.

Vox, led by Rocío Monasterio, would be the fourth party with 9.2%, would have between 12 and 14 seats and could enter the regional government of the capital for the first time. Even the abstention of the xenophobic, anti-feminist and anti-independence movement would be enough for Ayuso to govern alone.

According to the exit polls, in the regional the left bloc would stop at 56-63 deputies. The most voted party after the PP is the PSOE with 18.4%, which under the leadership of Ángel Gabilondo remains the first force on the left, however dropping to 25-28 seats compared to 37 in 2019. Followed by Mas Madrid by Mónica García with 15.42% and 21-24 deputies, and Unidas Podemos with Pablo Iglesias at 7.9%, or 10-11 deputies, three or four more than two years ago.

Great defeated Ciudadanos, which would leave the local Assembly having not exceeded the 5% threshold: a hard blow, passing from 26 representatives to zero. The turnout, meanwhile, was a record: 69.19% (at 7pm), 11 percentage points more than in 2019 (58.13%). If the results were confirmed, they would allow the PP to maintain control of the region it has led for a quarter of a century, also rewarding the decision to anticipate the vote. In this scenario, Ayuso would rule until 2023.

In spite of the desire of the outgoing president, whose electoral motto was ‘Freedom’, to “govern alone” because “coalitions are not good”, according to Metroscopia polls, about 78% of her voters were said in favor of a coalition with Vox’s far right. Inevitably, the pandemic weighed on the vote, while 40% of infections in the country were concentrated in the capital region. Despite this, Ayuso’s line has always been to oppose the policies of the national government of the socialist Pedro Sanchez, pushing instead for economic reopening.
