Sporting beats Benfica in a game with two comebacks (5-2)
Sporting beat Benfica this Tuesday in a match on the 4th round of the Champions League qualifying phase. In the first half, the Lions were on top of the match, but it was Benfica that reached the break with an advantage. In the 12th minute, Rodrigo Marquês took advantage of João Veloso’s error to open the scoring and the Reds scored the comeback goals in the few opportunities they created in the first half: José Melro scored the equalizer at 29′ and Ivan Lima (45′) , just before the break, put Benfica ahead for the first time. In the second half, Sporting were superior again and managed to turn the result around. The equalizing goal came in the 51st minute, through Geovany Quenda, who intended to cross and ended up scoring. The rest of the Lions’ goals came in the final stretch of the match. Geovany Quenda scored twice and turned the corner in the 82nd minute and, two minutes later, Rodrigo Marquês also scored twice and increased Sporting’s lead. At the end of the day, José Silva, who had come off the bench, scored the last goal of the match and sealed the result at 5-2.
As a result, Sporting equals (conditionally) Estoril at the top of the league table. This Tuesday, the Canarinhos will play against Gil Vicente (4pm).
