Sporting thrashes Gil Vicente and gets closer to the Portuguese title

Sporting had no difficulty, this Friday (12), beating Gil Vicente 4-0, away from home, in the 29th round of the Portugal League. Trincão (twice), Diamondé and Brazilian goalkeeper Andrew (own goal) scored the goals of the match.

With the rout, Sporting reaches 74 points and opens up a seven-point lead after 28 rounds (the Lions have a 20th round game to play). Benfica (67) is the closest pursuer. The last Portuguese title for the Alvalade team, in fact, was in 2020/21.

Even playing at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, Sporting were not intimidated and went all out. Coach Ruben Amorim’s team opened the scoring early, in the 7th minute, with Trincão. After hesitation from the defense, he stole the ball, cut two and shot across: 1-0.

Three minutes later, after a rehearsed corner, Diamondé rose above everyone to test and double the Lions’ advantage. At 31′, once again the post-loss pressure paid off. Trincão received it from Daniel Bragança and released the left-hander to make it 3-0.

At 38′, Pedro Gonçalves crossed from the left to top scorer Gyokeres, who tested firmly. The ball hit the crossbar, goalkeeper Andrew and went in, with the referee awarding an own goal to the Brazilian.

Sporting’s next match is away from home again, against Famalicão, in a delayed game of the 20th round. The match will take place on Tuesday (16), at 4:15 pm (Brasília time). Gil Vicente, which is in 14th place, with 28 points, in fact, remains at risk of falling. It is just two points above Portimonense, the first team in the Z-3.
