[China News Agency]Colombo News: According to Sri Lankan media reports on the evening of the 9th, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has informed Speaker Abeywardena that he will resign from the presidency on July 13.
According to local media “News1st”, Speaker Abe Wadener pointed out that in order to maintain a peaceful transition, it is crucial for the entire country to remain at peace. Abeywarden also asked all civil servants and other members of the public to remain calm and ensure the smooth running of their daily activities.
On the same day, large-scale protests and demonstrations took place in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Many demonstrators rushed into the presidential residence and demanded the president’s resignation. According to local sources, the president has left Colombo. The leaders of Sri Lanka’s political parties then held a meeting to demand the resignation of both the president and the prime minister. Some protesters also set fire to the private residence of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. Currently, about 30 people have been injured in the protests.
Wickremesinghe also said on the 9th that he would resign as prime minister by accepting the advice of the leaders of various parties to make way for the formation of an all-party government.
In recent months, Sri Lanka has faced problems such as lack of foreign exchange, soaring prices, and shortage of power and oil supply. Protesters have launched successive demonstrations and protests, demanding that the government quickly solve the economic crisis facing the country. Defence Chief Shavindra Silva on Monday asked all Sri Lankans to support the armed forces and police to ensure the country maintains peace.
