Hotel Mumbai is inspired by the true story of the terror attack at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, India, in 2008.

The following is a synopsis of Hotel Mumbai at Trans TV Cinema.
The story opens on November 26, 2008, when a waiter named Arjun (Dev Patel) works at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. He is the subordinate of head chef Hemant Oberoi (Anupam Kher).
The hotel has a variety of guests, including a woman of British-Iranian descent, Zahra Kashani (Nazanin Boniadi) and her husband, David (Armie Hammer), who is American.
They also stay with their child, a nanny named Sally (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), and a guard named Vasili (Jason Isaacs).
However, the situation turned tense when terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Taiba organization launched attacks on 12 locations in Mumbai, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Conditions are increasingly difficult because the local police are not trained and do not have adequate weapons. They also had to survive the attacks while waiting for help from New Delhi.
In the midst of the chaos, Arjun, David, Zahra, and Vasili are trapped in the hotel restaurant with several other guests. Meanwhile, Sally and Cameron are in the room and are unaware of the attack.
David then manages to bring Sally and Cameron along with him. They then try to stay safe amidst terrorist threats.
Arjun also tries to save more people. He helps hotel guests get into the Chambers Lounge, a hidden club inside the hotel, in the belief that he will be safe.
Arjun’s efforts continue amidst the onslaught of terrorists who continue to launch merciless attacks. He also faces various dilemmas because he has to save many lives at the hotel where Arjun works.
Hotel Mumbai is adapted from a documentary entitled Surviving Mumbai about the attack on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in 2008. The film was directed by Anthony Maras with a script written with John Coliee.
Apart from Dev Patel, this film also stars Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Anupam Kher, and Jason Isaacs.
Hotel Mumbai had its global premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film also generated box office revenues of US$21.1 million, not much different from the production cost of US$17.3 million.
