Teide volcano snow-free for the first time in over 100 years
The Teide volcano on the Spanish Canary island of Tenerife is snow-free in winter for the first time since 1916, Canarian Weekly reports.
The winter in the Canary Islands has been the warmest since 1961 with an average temperature of 17.7 degrees – 2.5 degrees above normal, according to the Spanish Meteorological Institute AEMET.
At the same time, drought and a lack of rainfall have meant that sand and dust from the Sahara Desert, a dust fog called calima, has been more intensive than usual, writes the newspaper. There have only been twelve days this winter without calima, writes NTB.
The warmest day this winter was recorded on 16 January on Fuerteventura, when the temperature reached 31.7 degrees.
Thus, for the first time, there has not been a queue at the entrance to the Teide National Park of people who wanted to go up to sled on the snow.
