Dominic Thiem clearly missed the jump into the main draw of the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo.
The 30-year-old from Lower Austria lost to Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 93rd) in the first qualifying round for the Masters after just over an hour of play with 1:6, 2:6.
The original draw included Arthur Cazaux (ATP 74th) as the first opponent. However, the young Frenchman benefits from the fact that the Czech Jiri Lehecka withdrew his entry at short notice and Gael Monfils therefore slips into the main field without the wildcard that was given to him. Cazaux receives the wildcard and does not have to qualify.
Thiem inferior
The former number three in the tennis world made a classic false start and quickly found herself 0-3 behind. At 1:4, Thiem gives up his serve again, Bautista Agut then serves to zero to win the set.
The Lichtenwörth native also received a break at the beginning of the second set, but immediately got it back in the next game. Shortly afterwards, Bautista Agut got the break to make it 3:2, and another one to make it 5:2 sealed the defeat for Thiem. The 35-year-old Spaniard increases the head-to-head lead to 5:2.
Thiem will soon lose his top 100 ranking. He is currently number 95 in the ATP live ranking, after Monte Carlo he will drop 45 points from the second round exit last year at the same venue on April 15th.
Next week Thiem will compete with a wildcard at the 250cc tournament in Munich.
