The anti-Chinese vote wins in Taiwan: the progressive Lai will be the new president with over 40% of the vote

Taiwan remains in the hands of progressives. All that is missing is the official status, but with 95% of the ballots counted and 5.3 million votes obtained, the current vice-president Lai Ching-te, known as William Lai, will become the new president of the rebellious island. So much so that even his main competitor, the candidate of Kuomintang (Kmt) Hou You-ihhas already admitted defeat and wished Lai good work.

The future president belonging to the Democratic Progressive Party (Ppd) exceeded 40% of the votes. The country confirms itself as distant from the positions of the Chinese with which a future of new clashes and frictions is therefore foreseen. There People’s Republic already in the hours of the vote he had provoked with demonstrations of military force. It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to form a majority executive, given that the candidate placed third Ko Wen-jie of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), considered the third way.

“Thank you all. I did my best, I am very sad that I was unable to effect a change of government. I am very sorry,” Hou Yu-ih told supporters of him. And he then congratulated William Lai: “I hope that all parties can face the challenges of Taiwan. We need one United Taiwan. We have many issues and problems, we need a government to solve them. And we need a government that is also at the service of its young people.”

Lai, with a past in support of independence, rejoices by saying that Saturday’s victory is “a victory for the community of democracies. I want to thank the Taiwanese people for writing a new chapter in our democracy. This is our unwavering commitment.” And he launches the first dig at China, with which a harsh confrontation is promised in the years of his presidency: “The Taiwanese people have successfully resisted the efforts of external forces to influence our elections. Only the people of Taiwan have the right to choose their president, we are confident in this.”

Beijing itself is defined, in his speech, as a threat to the autonomy of the island, so much so that Lai says he is “determined to safeguard Taiwan from the continuous threats and intimidation by China” and to maintain the status quo on both sides of the Strait. To achieve this “he will use dialogue instead of confrontation”.
