“The Phantom of the Opera” will be available at the Raimund Theater in Vienna from next Friday.
The Phantom is already lurking: just a few days left and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical classic “The Phantom of the Opera” takes off again at Vienna’s Raimund Theater. In the last few meters before the celebratory gala premiere on Friday, Christian Struppeck, musical director of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, gave a final insight, together with the team, into the new production by Cameron Mackintosh, which brings one of the most successful musicals in history back to Vienna.
Impressions from the photo and media sample
The title role stars Swedish audience favorite Anton Zetterholm, who is well known to Viennese musical audiences in other roles. At his side in her Vienna debut as Christine, the Phantom’s chosen one, is the Dutch Lisanne Clémence Veeneman.
The original production of “Phantom” has been seen in over 40 countries so far
The original production of “Phantom” has been seen in 46 countries to date and attracted around 160 million visitors to the musical palaces. The German-language premiere took place in 1988 at the Theater an der Wien and moved to the Raimund Theater in 1990, where it was shown until 1993.
So now the comeback, in which the decision was made to recast the film by successful producer Cameron Macintosh. This was created ten years ago and has been extremely successful so far, as demonstrated by sold-out series of performances in Great Britain, the USA and Australia.
Tens of thousands of tickets sold
And the phantom pain of the long absence seems to be great among the musical fans in Vienna. The previous week, VBW reported a sales record with more than 120,000 tickets sold. The consequence: The “Phantom” is now playing in July and sales are open for all performances from the beginning of September.
