The European Parliament paid tribute to the champions of the Spanish women’s national football team, winners of the 2023 World Cup, as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations. Captain Ivana Andrés and footballer Alba Redondo spoke in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In their joint speech, they stated that a more just and equitable society must be built through education. «Sport is a unique tool that can change lives and educate», «girls all over the world should have examples of women who help them overcome obstacles» they added.
Iratxe García, president of the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, remarked that the Spanish champions have “made history” and have become “the reference for many girls who know that there is no barrier to realizing their dreams”. «You have said ‘enough’ to the attacks that women suffer every day and that a part of society does not recognize. Just keep quiet” in reference to the protests triggered by the non-consensual kiss given by the former president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales to the champion Jennifer Hermoso, during the celebrations for the victory of the World Cup.
At the end of the event, the players presented Metsola with a shirt with her name and number 27, in reference to the EU member states.
