The European Union and the United States have joined forces to condemn Russia for its attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which have heightened the risk of a nuclear accident. The European bloc’s ambassador to international organizations, Carl Hallergard, stated that Russia’s actions at the plant are in violation of the United Nations Charter and significantly increase the risks to nuclear safety.
The United States also placed blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin for the instability at the plant, citing his invasion of Ukraine as the root cause. The US ambassador to the IAEA, Laura Holgate, reiterated that any potential nuclear accident would be a direct consequence of Putin’s actions in Ukraine.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed concern over the situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant, noting the escalation of attacks in recent days. IAEA director general Rafael Grossi warned that the ongoing attacks pose serious dangers to nuclear security and called for an immediate end to the violence.
The IAEA will be taking the case to the UN Security Council next week to address Russia’s refusal to cease its attacks and create a safety zone around the plant. The agency has been calling for months for the implementation of safety measures to protect the facility and prevent a potential nuclear accident.
Ukraine also spoke out against Russia’s attempts to blame them for the attacks, labeling it as a desperate effort to conceal Russia’s own guilt. The situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant remains precarious, with fears of a potential nuclear accident mounting as the attacks continue.
