Former Iranian Foreign Minister and advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Kamal Kharrazi, once again issued a threat regarding the development of nuclear weapons. In an interview with Al Jazeera television, Kharrazi warned that if Iran’s existence is threatened, they may reconsider their nuclear doctrine.
This statement comes amidst growing tensions between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, escalating since the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran has since abandoned the limits imposed by the agreement and continues to enrich uranium to levels close to weapons-grade.
Additionally, Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for missile attacks on two Panamanian-flagged container ships in the Gulf of Aden. The attacks caused no damage, but raised concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region.
The Joint Maritime Information Center, led by the United States, confirmed the attacks and stated that the ships were likely targeted due to perceived affiliation with Israel. The Houthis have carried out numerous attacks on merchant ships in recent months, impacting shipping traffic in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The continued aggression by Iran and its allies underscores the volatile situation in the Middle East and the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. The international community must remain vigilant and work towards promoting stability and peace in the region.
