Vasily Dubkovone of the Russian dissident’s lawyers Alexei Navalny died in prison, was arrested today in Moscow for “disturbing public order”. Qualified sources reported this to Novaya Gazeta. Dubkov had accompanied Lyudmila Navalnaya, Nalvany’s mother, in the Arctic city of Salekhard on February 16, helping her to get her son’s body back. The lawyer was released a few hours later.
The dissident’s team and family fail to obtain a room for the public farewell to the opponent. “We called most of the private and public funeral agencies, commercial sites and funeral halls – wrote spokesperson Kira Yarmysh in X, who yesterday launched an appeal for a space to be made available. Somewhere they say the room is occupied. Somewhere they refuse to mention the name Navalny. In one place we were told directly that funeral homes were prohibited from working with us.”
Meanwhile, Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, defined the calls by Alexei Navalny’s supporters for protest actions as “provocative”, claiming that they are “invitations to violate the laws” and threatened “legal consequences” for “those who in any how they react to these calls.” The reference is to the Russian dissident Leonid Volkov, friend and collaborator of Alexei Navalny, who said he was convinced that a protest called for March 17, the final day of the Russian presidential elections, would be Navalny’s “last testament”.
