The Netherlands surprised Germany in the first four minutes. Joey Veerman maximized Maximilian Mittelstaedt’s blunder to open the scoring.

Mittelstaed’s throw-in to Toni Kroos was followed up by a sloppy backpass that fell into the path of Memphis Depay. Depay’s pass from the right side of the penalty box was completed by Veerman with a volley to make the score 1-0.

The Dutch advantage only lasted for a short time. Mittelstaedt made amends for his mistake in the eleventh minute to bring Germany level at 1-1.

Starting from a corner kick on the left wing, Mittelstaedt finished Jamal Musiala’s short pass with a hard kick from outside the penalty box.

The Netherlands almost scored a second goal. Daley Blind’s cross to the far post was headed by Matthijs de Ligt, the ball went to Donyell Malen. However, a sweep in front of the German goal meant that Malen failed to reach the ball.

Before halftime, Kai Havertz was free up front after receiving a through ball. Havertz’s shot in a one-on-one situation was blocked by Bart Verbruggen, even though the linesman raised the flag for offside.

Depay threatened Germany after an hour of the match. Malen got the ball on the byline then sent a pass to Depay. From the 6 yard box, Depay’s shot just went over.

Germany reacted. Mittelstaedt pierced the Dutch defense before firing a long-range shot. Verbruggen makes a good save. The following corner was also cleared.

Germany finally scored the long-awaited second goal. In the 85th minute, Fuellkrug etched his name on the scoreboard to restore Germany’s lead.

Toni Kroos’ corner kick on the left wing was met by Fuellkrug with a header from inside the penalty box. Verbruggen swatted the ball away but the ball had already crossed the goal line. Germany again beat the Netherlands 2-1.

The Netherlands created a dangerous opportunity after Wout Weghorst got the ball in the penalty box. However, Weghorst’s low kick was caught by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
