News that seems like an April Fool’s joke. The price of electricity on the wholesale market in Spain it dropped to zero today. A confirmation – as reported by Ansa from Madrid – which comes from the data ofOperator of the Iberian energy market (Omie) in which we see a curve that drops after the maximum recorded in the previous days. As explained among others by the economic newspaper Five daysthis situation is mainly due to the increase in electricity production through wind and hydraulic systems, coinciding with the effects of a disturbance that has been affecting the Iberian Peninsula for several days.
The value of zero with regards to the cost of wholesale electricity is set at various time periods today, even reaching the negative zone (-0.01 euro) in the period between 1pm and 4pm. The situation prices close to or equal to zero in some time periods have already been recorded on some previous days during the month of March. However, this huge reduction in prices is reflected in the market only partially in the bills of final consumersat least in the short term: in fact, an automatic increase from 10% to 21% on VAT on electricity has been triggered.
Spain contained the rise in prices with measures taken by the Sanchez government. In particular, since June 2022 Madrid had introduced a maximum gas price cap of 40 euros per megawatt hour, thus mitigating the bullish impact triggered by the war in Ukraine which, in some situations, as everyone remembers, pushed prices up to over 300 euros on the Amsterdam stock exchange.
