It is interesting to know the story of Zhang Hongchao who got the business idea to start a business while working at a kiosk while in college.

Quoting pages mixue.asia, written Wednesday (13/3/2024), while still a student at Henan University of Finance and Economics, Zhang Hongchao was looking for a part-time job in June 1997 at a cold drink shop. This part-time job is to help ease the family’s financial burden. While working at the shop, Zhang Hongchao got the inspiration to start his own business.

With a loan from his grandmother, he opened a shaved ice shop in his hometown of Zhengzhou, Henan. Quoting Bnews, he borrowed around 4,000 yuan or around USD 483. Through the ice shop, he sells various types of shaved ice, ice cream, smoothies and other menus.

However, business travel is not an easy thing. Zhang Hongchao faced many obstacles and finally closed his first outlet.

Not giving up on his dream, Zhang Hongchao opened a second ice shop again in 1999. He named it Mixue Bingcheng which means sweet snow palace. Zhang Hongchao also shifted his product to soft ice cream products with cones. He switched products to ice cream as it became popular in Zhengzhou since 2006, and the price of ice cream soared.

To make ice cream more affordable, Zhang created a new recipe. With this recipe he offers a cheaper price of around 20 percent compared to the same product.

In mainland China, Mixue is only sold for 7 yuan or about 97 US cents. Meanwhile, lemon tea and lemonade are sold for 6 yuan and 4 yuan respectively. The average drink only sells for around 6-8 yuan.
