Hamas Accepts Ceasefire Proposal for Gaza Strip as Israel Prepares for Possible Invasion
The Hamas terrorist group has announced its acceptance of a ceasefire proposal presented by Qatar and Egypt for the war-torn Gaza Strip. Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, made the announcement after speaking with Qatari Prime Minister Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian Intelligence Minister Abas Kamel.
However, the Hamas official stated that the decision now rests with Israel, as the Israeli government has yet to confirm their acceptance of the ceasefire proposal. An Israeli official claimed that the truce Hamas accepted was a “watered down” version that included terms Israel could not agree to.
In response to the potential ceasefire, the Israeli military has ordered tens of thousands of Palestinians in the city of Rafah to evacuate, indicating a possible ground invasion. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani stated that Israel was preparing for a “limited scope operation” but did not specify if it would lead to a broader invasion.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the mass evacuation orders in Rafah, warning that it would only increase the suffering of civilians already living in overcrowded and inadequate conditions. The global community, including the United States, has urged Israel to reconsider plans for an invasion to protect the civilian population in Gaza.
