On September 23, local time, Benny Thompson, Chairman of the Special Investigation Committee of the House of Representatives responsible for investigating the riots on Capitol Hill on January 6, revealed that the committee had summoned four advisers and aides to former President Trump, including the former White House. Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former White House communications deputy chief of staff Dan Skavino, former Defense Department official Kashyap Patel, and former Trump adviser Stephen Bannon.

Thompson said that there are data showing that Meadows has repeatedly contacted senior officials of the state and federal governments to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election or prevent the results of the election from taking effect. At the same time, there is information showing that Meadows had contacted the organizers of the rally on January 6.

Thompson also stated in a letter to Bannon that Bannon had had dialogues with many members of Congress in an attempt to prevent the verification of the election results. Thompson wrote that Bannon claimed on January 5, 2021, that “hell will open its doors tomorrow.” Therefore, the committee needs to hear the testimony of Bannon himself.

According to reports, the committee will first hear the testimony of Bannon and Patel on October 14, and the testimony of Meadows and Scarvino on October 15.

On January 6, some demonstrators who supported the then President Trump’s overthrow of the 2020 presidential election results forcibly broke into the U.S. Capitol for several hours, and the joint meeting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, which was verifying the election results, was interrupted. The riots caused 5 deaths, including a congressional police officer, and injured about 140 law enforcement personnel. After the riots, multiple government agencies including the Senate and the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Justice launched investigations into the incident.
