Negotiations for the release of hostages and a cessation of hostilities in Gaza are “going well,” according to John Kirby, a White House spokesperson. Emissary Brett McGurk has been conducting talks in Cairo and Israel with the goal of securing a prolonged pause to release all hostages and bringing more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The plan, drawn up by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, includes a six-week truce, an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel, and the entry of a large amount of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Kirby noted that there are also discussions for long-term solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
During a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, there was support for a two-state solution as the only possible resolution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also voiced support for a two-state solution and emphasized the need to end the conflict while ensuring lasting peace and security.
These discussions come after the Israeli Parliament approved a resolution against any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian State, stating that it would be rewarding “the unprecedented terrorism” of Hamas.
The negotiations continue amidst ongoing civilian casualties and will be critical to achieving a lasting peace and security in the region. Stay tuned for further updates.
